I have always felt like a stranger in a foreign land since I could remember. The first time I moved out of my small coastal city to the Dallas Fort Worth metro area and found work; I was greeted with hatred by co-workers and followed through stores simply because of the color of my skin. It was the first time I had experienced racism. I found myself alone as the racial mix just didn’t match up -I truly felt like the token black. The only African American to sit in at upper management meetings and the list goes on. . .
Like most of the world, I waited with anticipation to see if Barack Obama would be named the 44th President of the United States. Disappointed? -I was not! I watched the TV and witnessed history in the making; the tears began to flow. As a newly wed, I shared the evening of the election with my husband. I only wish my grand father could have witnessed the US’s first black president. I remember many times as he reflected upon his past. He often spoke of having to move off the sidewalk to let a white women pass. How he had to go around to the back of a business as a customer. We all have heard these accounts and have long since moved on. Although though there have been major changes to improve race relations; for many reasons, equality was always just out of reach for African Americans.
As Whoopi Goldberg said on the view day after the election, “I now can put my suit case down.” It is true; I now have a better sense of the US being My country. Conservatives could not comprehend when Michelle Obama said she is now proud of her country -I did. I believe many African Americans understood as well.
President Elect Barack Obama will not solve all the countries woes -past presidents could not meet all the demands of the nation. But with the “Audacity of Hope” which Obama possess; I am optimistic of my future.
From all of us at ThickSistah.com! -Congratulations Barack Obama.
