Travel Tips, Airline Fees & Changes
Want to try and keep your air fare costs reasonable?
Travel on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday will save you money on air travel and please keep in mind that connecting flights are often cheaper than nonstops. So please be mindful when booking on your own or with a travel agent, some of the additional fees that apply outside these ranges.
Please, please, please remember that airlines raise fares for travel during peak holiday periods and for last minute travel. It's a good idea to check prices for all surrounding airports that are a short drive from your nearest airport. I recently found air fare to be more reasonable for a client out of Austin rather than Dallas. She lived there but she was traveling with a group.
It all worked out because her connecting flight was in Dallas and she continued on with her group from there. How much did she save? About $350 for a last minute ticket. I almost drove to Austin to save the money myself for the same trip.
Flying last minute?
A 14 day notice can still (but not guarantee) provide a decent but elevated price, 10 days advance notice and you are getting pricey, less than 8 days advance notice - you have spent your mortgage or rent and car note on an airline ticket.
If you prefer an aisle or window seat, it is best to make sure that you specify so at the time of your booking - waiting until you arrive at the airport could prevent you from receiving your desired seating.
Luggage Fees:
Many of you have heard that baggage (luggage) fees have risen; American Airlines stepped out and really hiked their prices. Your 1st bag will now cost $20 and your 2nd bag will be an additional $30! This is EACH way. So PACK LIGHT!!!
Delta charges $15 for the 1st bag and $25 for the 2nd. Not sure what the cost is for your airline? - Visit their website and look it up under baggage. Unfortunately, other airlines will probably soon follow.
Identification Changes:
Is your name Jonathan James Doe but you go by Jon Doe? New security requirements have been implemented at airport security check points to ensure that names are scanned before departure against the terrorist no fly list. What to do to protect yourself? Read the following article for new rules and requirements <http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/16/travel/16practsa.html?_r=1> . And to stay on top of travel requirements book mark and view <http://www.tsa.gov/> on a regular basis.

Be blessed!

Living Through Thin Eyes
By: Tracy Lightner
If you wear a size thirteen or greater, you are considered to be "Plus Size." I am tired of the fact that unless I wore a size twelve or less, there is almost no one who represented me as a "THICK Sistah." Many of you can relate to knowing how wonderful shopping for clothes were during pre-child bearing years. Even if you can't, there's a point in your life where you were perhaps smaller in size. So we are here now, lets make the most of it!
Fortunately I come from good stock but finding clothes that were to my liking grew to be taxing on my patience. Many women share the struggle of finding an outfit that works for them. I say, unless you do something about how plus size women are represented in media, relationship and even amongst ourselves; nothing will change! I challenge all women of size to join me in a THICK revolution! No more negative insults, no more dying to be thin! You are who you are and its time that the world accepts us as well.
Being thick doesn't mean that you have to settle for less. I encourage all "THICK Sistahs" to exercise and eat right. With all of her money, even Oprah understood that there are no quick ways to thin. Having extra pounds means that we must take even better care of ourselves. But it doesn't mean you have to hide that glowing inner beauty that's just dying to come out! We can come together and change the way society views us.
In the 1930s, having a robust physique was attractive. Remember Betty Boop? She had that undeniable self-confidence about herself. And not only did it help elevate the view of others but Betty's image showed America that THICK women are beautiful, desired and successful!

But most of all we are people with THICK dreams, THICK ideas, THICK passion and THICK purpose. And we matter!
Someone very smart once said, "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for everything."
Lets stand together and create acceptance for THICK females everywhere. Join us here at ThickSistah.com! and become part of a new era for THICK women. The possibilities are limitless

Adventures of a 30-Something Rebel: Tracy, tell us a little bit about your early life. What were your dreams and goals?
Tracy Lightner: One thing which has been constant in my life was the undeniable urge to dream. When I attended grade school, my prayer would be to travel to Africa and to see the world! With the limitations of being raised in a single parent household and two other siblings; I had no idea how I would accomplish the dreams which filled my spirit.

In this day and age when the world is changing, technology is advancing, and years have passed by in a blink of an eye, Black women may wonder about the future and how it will directly impact them. Today’s Black women are beginning to realize that change in the world, and they want a positive piece of it. From the test of time, many women are learning what it takes to be successful and get ahead.
Living in a world where you are constantly reminded that you are the minority of the minority, sooner or later you start to catch on and grab that piece of success. That success can involve anything from earning a living to raising a family. However, along the way you may begin to doubt yourself, you may even wonder about your self-worth, and at the end of the day, you want reassurance just to stay in the game.
Tip #1:
When your mind is stuck in the past, you are in fact a prisoner of your past, resisting the key to free yourself into a new direction for your future.
The past is gone. Sometimes you have to let it go. Black women love very hard. They feel as though they have to. It is their core source of strength. It is also a quality they fully accept from others. Whatever has happened in your life, you have to embrace the good and let go of the negativity, but always look ahead as optimistic as you can.
Tip #2:
Whatever your constant focus is on, is what will move you closer to happiness or deeper into dissatisfaction.
Focus on your strengths and refuse to accept being Black and a woman as a weakness. Train your mind to believe you are self-confident and capable, and soon your actions will follow pursuit.
Tip #3:
When you start to understand and believe the depth of your worth, then NO ONE can fool you into thinking what your worth is as a Black woman.
The media has a funny way of interjecting what is beauty and what is not; what is popular and what is thrown out. Don’t believe the hype! There are some who seem to have it all on the outside, but are hurting badly inside. Realize that your inner happiness means more than any outer material possession or physical trait. Love you, and the world has no choice but to acknowledge it and accept it.
Tip #4:
If something isn’t working then change your approach. Knowledge is everything. Along with knowledge and persistence, you will make better choices.
Believe it or not, you might be surprised that you don’t know yourself as well as you might think. Live life, get a life, experience something new, and be open to change in your life.
Tip #5:
Life just isn’t long enough to settle. The strength to change your situation is already inside you, you just have to realize and find it.
Black women settle far more than they have to. They may want a change, but their actions tell a different story.
Realize you don’t have to settle. In some cases, it’s just demeaning to your self-worth. Recognize your strengths, work on improving your weaknesses, and always recognize the love that lives in the core of your soul.
Tip #6:
When you think others are holding you back, it’s your own way of thinking that’s holding many Black women back.
Many people resort to excuses - constant excuses. If you want something, go after it. Don’t allow insecurities or excuses to get in the way for too long, and stop your journey through life. More so, don’t for one second think you can’t accomplish your goals because of another human being.
Tip #7:
The quality of the relationship you have with yourself determines how many fears you have, and more importantly how you handle your fears.
You may have never thought of what type of relationship you have with yourself, but you should. You are going to be with yourself for the rest of your life. You might as well get to know yourself as much as you can. Always look for ways to enhance your growth - whether that growth is spiritual, emotional, relating to your career, family or health.
